Columbia JVBC 2019-2020 Season

Columbia 13-Black continues to build winning momentum

Columbia 13-Black racked up their second multi-win tournament in a row against U-14 opponents on Sunday. After finishing 2nd in their pool, Columbia's youngest team lost a tough bracket match (23-25 in the first set) to another U-13 team. It was their first U-13 loss, and the first tournament where they weren't the top finishing U-13 team. These girls continue to improve, and we're sure they'll have the opportunity to avenge that loss. Keep it up girls!

Columbia 13-Black scores: defeated Team Yakima 14-4 Linda 25-3 (that score is real), 25-19; defeated Selah 14 White 25-11, 25-17; lost to Sweets 14-2 Blue 11-25, 17-25; lost to Shockwave 13 23-25, 18-25. (2-2, 4-4)

Columbia 14-Black reaches Gold Semifinal at Stars & Spikes despite injuries

Columbia 14-Black came into their tournament on Saturday already missing a player due to injury. Before their day was over, they were down two more. Despite losing two setters, the Columbia ladies managed to reach the Championship Semifinal before being unable to overcome the losses to their team personnel. Despite falling short of their championship goal this time, these ladies continue to make progress towards their potential as a team. Keep up the hard work and get healthy ladies!

Columbia 14-Black scores: defeated O-Town 14 Black 25-15, 19-25, 15-10; defeated CPA 13 Black 25-27, 25-12, 25-8; lost to Cats 14 Stark 22-25, 16-25; defeated Post Falls 14 Black 25-20, 25-16; lost to Spash 14 25-21, 17-25, 14-16. (3-2, 7-6) - Championship Gold Semifinalists

Columbia 14-Red reaches Bronze Final at Stars & Spikes

Columbia 14-Red finished 2nd in their morning pool then swept thru the first two rounds of bracket play to reach the Bronze Division Championship Final at the Stars & Spikes tournament on Saturday. The ladies of 14-Red weren't quite able to close out their division final however, falling short in their last match after a long stretch of convincing wins. Keep up the focus ladies!

Columbia 14-Red scores: lost to Kootenai Elite 13 Gold 16-25, 19-25; defeated Post Falls 14-2 Orange 25-10, 25-13; defeated North Idaho Thunder 14 Black 25-14, 25-17; defeated Idaho Impact 14 25-8, 25-11; defeated North Idaho Thunder 14 Black 25-13, 25-15; lost to Cats 12-1 Black 20-25, 18-25. (4-2, 8-4) - Bronze Finalists

Columbia 17-Black powers thru Las Vegas Classic

As much fun as Columbia 16-Black was to watch at the Las Vegas Classic, their sister Columbia 17-Black team was even more impressive! Despite missing a player who couldn't make the trip, and several injuries that kept key players out at different times, these ladies fought (and won) against some very elite competition. Columbia 16-Black played in the single U-16 Division at the LV Classic, but Columbia 17-Black played in the very tough Open Division of U-17 against the most elite teams in the field. By playing in the Open Division, the ladies of 17-Black were constantly seen by college coaches from all over the country (it's much tougher to be seen in the weaker Club Divisions for U-18 or U-17), and our players have often been contacted later by coaches who first discovered them in Las Vegas.

Columbia 17-Black used an undefeated Day 2 of the tournament to power their way to the Flight 2A Semifinal, and finishing (just like 16-Black) 53rd overall, but in the much larger 232 team U-17 Open/Club field.

Columbia 16-Black performs at Las Vegas Classic

For Columbia 16-Black's players, it was mostly a new experience playing at a "national level" tournament like the Las Vegas Classic. It's only been a couple of years now that this major recruiting tournament has had a U-16 division, and the high level of play across the 120 team field is exactly why Columbia sent this team. Learning to play against elite level competition (with the added pressure of college coaches looking on), prepares our players to compete and be recruited as they continue to develop their individual and team skills. The ladies of 16-Black proved equal to the pressure, placing 53rd in the elite 120 team field, and reaching the Flight 1B Quarterfinal match. (They were still in contention for the Gold Division during play on the 2nd day.) We're looking forward to having Columbia 16-Red join these ladies when the club heads back to Las Vegas in April for the SOCAL National Qualifier!

So how do we judge their performance? It would be easy to say that Columbia 16-Black had the highest finish of any team from the Evergreen Region (they did), but Columbia is also the only club in our Region that dares to send a team this age. So let's compare to the rest of the Northwest. Two teams from the Columbia Empire Region (Oregon/SW Washington) finished higher, and three from the Puget Sound Region finished higher (although not by much), meaning Columbia 16-Black was the sixth highest finishing team from the entire Pacific Northwest. Good job!

Congratulations to all our players, keep pushing your game higher!

Columbia 13-Black continues to improve at Mid-State Classic

Columbia 13-Black continues to improve their game tournament by tournament. On Sunday, at the Mid-State Classic they made steady improvement to their performance going 1-2 in their pool and forcing a tie-breaker in one loss that went to 13-15. Their win in match three of pool play was convincing against another U-13 team, and their momentum carried them to a win in their consolation quarterfinal match as well. A tough U-14 opponent in the semifinal stopped their shot at a championship, but for the second tournament in a row, Columbia 13-Black was the best U-13 team in the field. Keep defending your age-level girls!

Columbia 13-Black scores: lost to Club Gold 14-2 Black 13-25, 15-25; lost to Club Lokahi 14-2 25-27, 26-24, 13-15 (a tough loss that would have pushed Columbia 13-Black into the Championship bracket); defeated Sunnyside 13-1 Black 25-15, 26-24; defeated KC Thunder 14 Black 25-19, 25-19; lost to NCWVBC 14-2 Black 12-25, 9-25. - Consolation Semifinalists (2-3, 5-6)

Columbia 16-Black plays for Adidas Classic Championship

Columbia 16-Black (like their sister 16-Red team) rolled undefeated thru their morning pool at the Adidas Classic Sunday in Coeur d'Alene. Unlike their sister team, they continued to win thru the next two rounds of bracket play in the Championship Gold Division. In the Championship Final, they met the same team that had ended Columbia 16-Red's undefeated day, and had their undefeated string end as well. Finishing 2nd in the 24 team field, these ladies will be looking for another chance to finish their oppenents down the schedule. Keep rolling ladies!

Columbia 16-Black scores: defeated Mid-State 16 25-13, 25-21; defeated NCWVBC 16-1 Gold 25-10, 25-10; defeated CPA 15 25-9, 25-11; defeated Shockwave 15 National 25-18, 25-21; defeated CB Elite 16 25-15, 22-25, 15-6; lost to CPA 16 Elite 28-26, 21-25, 10-15. - Championship Gold Finalists

Columbia 14-Black will be seeded top of Contender Division for PL in March

Columbia 14-Black finished an up and down outing at CEVA Power League on Sunday by doing what we like every team to do... win out. Their victory at the end of a long day makes them the #1 seed for the Contender Division in March. While these ladies are doing lots of things right, they'll be looking to add some consistency to their game and move up from their current #33 of 148 teams overall next month. Keep working hard ladies!

Columbia 14-Black scores: lost to (#24) OJVA 14-3 White 19-25, 22-25; defeated NW Reign 14-2 25-18, 25-21; lost to TEAM Hiki No 14-1 25-23, 19-25, 15-17 (this was a tough loss); lost to NPJ 14-2 Black 22-25, 23-25; defeated NW Reign 14-2 25-13. - Contender Division, 33rd of 148 teams.

Columbia 16-Red sweeps pool, reaches Gold Division at Adidas Classic

Columbia 16-Red swept their tournament pool without dropping a set at the Adidas Classic in North Idaho. The 16-Red ladies had their run end in the Gold Division, when they lost to the eventual tournament Champions. A different bracket draw probably would have see these ladies finish at least 3rd (instead of 5th overall), but we expect more Championships to come from this team.

Columbia 16-Red scores: defeated Out of System 15-1 25-9, 25-17; defeated APEX 15 Synergy 25-8, 25-17; defeated Idaho Impact 16 25-20, 25-18; lost to CPA Adidas 16 Elite 23-25, 10-25. (3-1, 6-2) - Gold Tournament Championship Quarterfinalists

Columbia 14-Red edges upwards at CEVA Power League

Columbia 14-Red looked primed to climb a division after winning their pool at CEVA Power League on Sunday. A tough loss in their Championship Semifinal kept them from making the division leap. (Three straight tie-breaker matches in pool play may not have helped their stamina for the afternoon.) The ladies of 14-Red still edged their seeding up two spots for the day, and will look to maintain their momentum over a full day at Power League in March. Keep it up ladies!

Columbia 14-Red scores: defeated CC Fusion 14-1 Black 25-17, 18-25, 15-3; defeated YVBA 13-1 Blue 25-23, 20-25, 16-14; lost to NW Reign 14-3 17-25, 25-5, 12-15; lost to MAC Juniors 14-2 Red 11-25, 19-25; lost to CC Fusion 14-1 Black 20-25. (2-3, 5-7) - Comeback Division
