Columbia JVBC 2019-2020 Season

Columbia 18-Black overcomes for Gold at INK

Columbia 18-Black's day already had a dire look at the start of INK due to news that a player had fallen ill at the hotel that morning. Then, during their first warmup period, a second player went down injured. Now badly short-handed, the 18-Black ladies ralled together and went to work.  First, they swept their power format pool despite two tie-breakers, then they went to work on the Gold bracket. By the time they reached the tournament semifinal, they'd won four straight and were ready to face their sister U-17 team. Both Columbia teams battled for the win, but the 18's wouldn't fold in this one. After their third tie-break win of the day, it was just not enough left in the tank as they fell finally in the Championship Final to finish 2nd (of 27 overall.) Great work ladies, and get well everyone!

18-Black scores: defeated CPA 17=1 25-19, 15-25, 15-10; defeated Cutting Edge 16-1 23-25, 25-17, 15-12; defeated North Idaho 17 Gold 25-23, 25-17; defeated North Idaho 18 Gold 25-22, 25-19; defeated Columbia 17-Black 18-25, 25-21, 15-12; lost to Cats 18-1 Black 24-26, 15-25.

Columbia 17-Black is golden at INK

After spending most of the last month pretty much dominating every venue where they played, Columbia 17-Black rolled into the INK determined to keep up the streak. Their determination held through their first two matches in their power format pool, but took a little hit when they lost a tough tie-breaker. That tie-breaker came back to haunt them when it moved them into the same side of the bracket as a pretty motivated U-18 sister team. This time, the 18's took the win to even their ledger for the month of April, and Columbia 17's finished 3rd overall (Gold bracket) in a tough 27-team field. 17-Black's only losses came to the two U-18 teams who played in the final. Columbia 17-Black will be the favorite this weekend to upgrade their ticket to USAV Nationals by dominating the U-17 bid bracket. Go get them ladies!

17-Black scores: defeated PAC-V 18 United 25-10, 17-25, 15-8; defeated CW Elite 18-1 22-25, 25-20, 15-12; lost to Cats 18-1 Black 25-21, 17-25, 9-15; defeated CPA 17-1 25-17, 17-25, 15-9; lost to Columbia 18-Black 25-18, 21-25, 12-15 (17-Black's fifth straight tie-break match.)

Columbia 16-Black and 15-Black find Gold at INK

Columbia 16-Black fought their way into the Gold bracket at INK, reaching the Gold Semifinals before being knocked out. 16-Black finished 5th in the 44 team field. Columbia 14-Black is Golden at INK

Columbia 14-Black swept into the Gold Division at INK over the weekend, and in the Championship Semifinal they played the match everone was waiting for. Unfortunately, this time they didn't come out on top against Performance, but they'll surely have another opportunity this weekend when both teams will be back in Spokane and hopefully meet in the Championship Final. Congratulations 14-Black ladies on finishing 3rd in the 49 team field!

14-Black scores: defeated Cats 14-2 Green 25-23, 25-10; defeated Splash 14-1 25-10, 25-18; lost to  MVA 14 Elite 27-25, 17-25, 8-15; defeated Splash 13-1 25-21, 25-16; defeated Renovators VC 14-1 25-21, 19-25, 15-13; lost to Performance 14-1 20-25, 17-25.

Columbia 13-Black climbs to Silver at INK

Columbia 13-Black wrecked havoc in their pool at INK over the weekend, upsetting the #2 seed and forcing the #1 seed into a tie-breaker. The 13-Black girls moved up to the Silver bracket, and were finally knocked out of the competition after a looong delay for the other team (eventual Silver champions) in their match. Congratulations girls on reaching the Silver Quarterfinals!

13-Black scores: lost to Club Gold 14-1 Blue 25-23, 13-25, 7-15; defeated Out of System 14-1 25-23, 25-23 (including an 11-point recovery in this one); defeated Cats 13-2 Silver 25-17, 25-21; lost to 7B 14-1 25-17, 17-25, 6-15.

Columbia 12-Black finishes Silver at INK

Columbia 12-Black prepped for EV Regionals by reaching the Silver Quarterfinals at INK over the weekend. Columbia's youngest team stormed back from an opening loss in their pool to win their next two in extra points, and then a tiebreaker win. (Defeating a Gold Quarterfinalist team along the way.) Keep up the hard work girls!

Columbia 14-Black caps CEVA Power League season with Bronze

Columbia 14-Black played the most grueling power league season of any Columbia team this year and finished strong at #22 (Bronze Division of Power I) in the 137 team field. Anyone watching the Bronze and Silver divisions play in Beaverton the final day would have seen EVERY #1 and #2 seed team in EVERY pool be upset in the first two rounds. the 14-Black ladies suffered one of those upsets by losing a 13-15 tie-breaker in their opening match. They rebounded to deliver their pool winner their only defeat of the day. But for that two point loss, 14-Black would have won their pool and quite possibly reached the Silver division. That kind of extremely tight competition is why Columbia returns to power league play each year. Way to power up the standings ladies!

14-Black scores: lost to NW Reign 14-1 25-17, 19-25, 13-15; defeated Webfoot 14-2 Silver 25-20, 25-17; lost to MAC juniors 14-1 Elite 20-25, 17-25; defeated NPJ 14-2 Black 25-18, 18-25, 17-15; lost to Trailsend 14-1 Leilani 22-25.

Columbia 17-Black takes ALL the Madness

Columbia 17-Black continued their "run of domination" by downing their U-18 sister team and capturing the (undefeatedColumbia March Madness tournament championship. Columbia 18-Black and 16-Black finished 2nd and 3rd behind the U-17 ladies. The win continued the streak that began for 17-Black with the NW Jamboree tournament championship, and then saw them earn a 17 USA bid to Junior Nationals. Congratulations everyone! (We're still looking for a team photo after this win. Send one to Chris.)

Columbia 17-Black qualifies for Junior Nationals at PNQ

Columbia 17-Black, PNQ 17 USA BidColumbia 17-Black swept their division (with one exception) at the Pacific Northwest Qualifier to reach the USA Division Championship Final. That one loss (to a Texas team) was repeated in the final despite a valiant effort by the U-17 ladies (who forced the match to a tie-breaker.) 17-Black finished 25th overall in a strong 75 team U-17 field. Reaching the championship final was good enough for our U-17 ladies to earn a bid to the USA Division at USAV Junior Nationals in Indianapolis. Congratulations players, coaches, and fans! Well done.

The Columbia ladies will be competing June 28th-July 2nd in 17 USA at Junior Nationals. (USA is the third level of the four "qualifying" divisions. The fifth division is open to teams without qualifying.) It's a big accomplishment to qualify, and we know they'll make us proud! Go Columbia!
